15-year-olds who engaged in screen-focused activities like chatting with friends online or playing video games within one hour of going to bed needed an additional 30 minutes to fall asleep.
Every extra hour children spent playing video games during the day, beyond their usual routine, their sleep was delayed by approximately five minutes.
According to the Cleveland clinic:
Jumping into bed and opening up your phone — can actually have a big impact on your overall health.
Doomscrolling, can distract you, which keeps you awake, stimulates your brain and delays REM sleep. In fact, when your brain revs up, it can keep you awake for hours beyond your normal bedtime.
It’s not just that you’re on your phone that can disrupt your sleep. It’s more what you’re doing with the phone that makes a difference, like actively using your phone.
